New Delhi: The Congress has reacted sharply after its former leader and ex-Union minister in the UPA Jitin Prasada joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Delhi on Wednesday, ahead of the crucial Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.

Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajaj Lallu held a press conference where he said that Prasada has betrayed the Congress. “The party gave him important positions while he was with us. We gave him tickets for elections each time, but how is the party at fault if he couldn’t win the polls?” Lallu said.

He added, “If a party has given you so much it is your responsibility to stay loyal to the party.”

Congress MLA Kuldeep Bishnoi, meanwhile, said the party needs to identify and empower mass leaders to win back states.

I realised I cannot work for people being in Congress party: Jitin Prasada on joining BJP

Having joined the saffron brigade today in presence of Union minister Piyush Goyal, Prasada said his decision to quit the Congress despite his family’s three-generation association with the party, was a well-thought-out one.

“I have a three-generation connection with Congress, so I took this important decision after a lot of deliberation. In the last 8-10 years I have felt that if there is one party that is truly national, it is BJP. Other parties are regional but this is national party. The rest are personality-driven,” Prasada said.

He added, “I felt the party I was in was not helping and working for people. I realised I cannot work for people being in Congress party. What is the relevance of staying in a party if you can’t protect interests of your people or work for them. I thank people in Congress who blessed me all these years but now I’ll work as a dedicated BJP worker.”
